A GROUNDBREAKING exhibition at the non-profit Chisenhale Gallery, co-organised with the Kunstverein Freiburg, Germany, was an important development in the career of Varda Caivano. Born in Buenos Aires and a graduate of London’s Royal College of Art master’s programme, Caivano is regarded as a bringing new life to painting with her illuminated, inexhaustible and vividly colourful constructions. She has since held a solo exhibition in the Tomio Koyama Gallery in Kyoto and her intensely painted, abstract work has attracted the attention of collectors and critics alike. The Chisenhale Gallery/Kunstverein Freiburg catalogue is an excellent showcase of her intriguing mix of non-linear figuration and abstraction, which has been frequently referred to in the mainstream British press. – GJ
