From our cultural ivory towers it can be tempting to look askance at the Mexican telenovela and dismiss it as a superficial, even trivial storytelling genre that lures a mass audience precisely because it is such easy viewing.

But such snobbery would ignore the fact that there is concrete science based on hard empirical evidence behind the global success of this narrative form, which Mexicans have not stumbled upon casually but through a species of genius.
