THIS book makes a valuable contribution to the study of endemic violence against women in Latin America by seeking to establish a rigorous analytical framework with which to move forward in studying this horrifying phenomenon. The problem is escalating: violence against women has increased in Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru and remains bad elsewhere. As the contributors suggest, there are structural reasons for this development, and it is on these that attention needs to focus. Femicide, they suggest, is structural violence that directly implicates the state and that is rooted in social, political, economic and cultural inequalities. This book should be required reading for students of Latin American politics.- EC
